Fuel charges are compounding already high airfares. If possible, travel offseason to get a lower airfare and lower hotel rates. Also, consider staying in a two-star hotel instead of a three-star hotel. When dining out, try ethnic restaurants instead of upscale restaurants. Check out the local tourist information office for free things to see and do.

Choose destinations such as Southeast Asia, Latin America, Africa, Eastern Europe and the Middle East where your dollar will go farther.

Train travel between cities may take longer but may be less expensive than flying or renting a car.
